Call to claim your prize: Perceived benefits drive the likelihood of contact in a mass marketing scam

Poster - Psychonomic Society 2017 Conference

The Wood Lab at Scripps College is pioneering work into the factors that put people at risk for victimization from Mass Marketing scams (MMS). Perpetrators of these scams usually contact their victims through email, text message, or postal mail. While some people will disregard these messages as “junk mail” or “spam” many people fall victim to such scams each year. This poster describes an investigation into several variables that were believed to influence the likelihood that a victim would respond to a scam message.

We are involved, just ask us how: A culturally-responsive needs assessment for Latino fathers with children in Head Start

Poster - American Evaluation Association 2017 Conference

At the beginning of the most recent grant cycle, the Head Start programs administered by Volunteers of America - Los Angeles (VOALA) approached the evaluation team to inquire about ways in which they could better incorporate fathers and other male caretakers into Head Start programming. Such initiatives have recently become a growing aspect of grant requirements. In response to this request, we developed a culturally-responsive qualitative study of male caretakers’ needs, the results of which were presented at the American Evaluation Association Conference in 2017.

Latent structures of athletic participation motivations among undergraduates

Poster - Social Personality Health 2017 Preconference

There are many reasons why students may want to participate in athletics. This factor analysis attempted to dissect the responses to a survey developed via focus groups by Dr. Kathleen Miller, PhD. The the scale that resulted from this process may be thought to express levels of value internalization as conceptualized by athletes who are largely naïve of psychological theories of motivation.

Prevention focus as a moderator of aggression towards women in video games

Poster - Society for Personality and Social Psychology 2017 Conference

This poster presentation describes the results of a survey project I undertook with a few colleagues at Claremont Graduate University. Inspired by the GamerGate Controversy and the ubiquitous verbal assaults experienced by women gamers, this study attempted to identify why some men get particularly nasty when they encounter women in gaming environments.

Don’t shoot the messenger: Using a dashboard to help deliver the bad news

Presentation - American Evaluation Association 2016 Conference

This presentation was delivered as part of a panel entitled “A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words…But Will They Use It?” which covered some of the data visualization best practices my colleagues at Volunteers of America - Los Angeles (VOALA) and I had developed while implementing Utilization-Focused Evaluation (UFE) methodology.
